Second Norway-GB interconnector awarded licence

Ofgem has awarded NorthConnect an interconnector licence for a 650km link to transmit power between Scotland and Norway.

The 1400MW High Volage DC (HVDC) connection already has planning permission for an HVDC convertor station near Peterhead. Applications for the cable and other offshore infrastructure are expected in 2017. The interconnector is due to begin operating in 2022.

The link will be the second between the GB and Norwegian grids. National Grid and Norwegian network company Stattnett are in the procurement phase for a 1400MW 750km link that will connect to GB in Blyth, Northumberland.
