One of the the reasons for the government pressure to move building heating to heat pumps, especially ground source for new build, is that gas burners produce harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx). Of course gas boiler manufacturers are resisting this, and hope to market hydrogen ready boilers, but the smart ones will be developing their own heat pump designs. The gas suppliers are also concerned to be able to continue to supply gas for heating and are investing substantial sums in installing plastic pipelines to deliver hydrogen for heating (as hydrogen can embrittle most steel) but may be left with stranded assets if building heating does switch exclusively to heat pumps by 2050.
