“We need your flexibility – and those that respond will get payback”. That’s the message from National Grid, which wants to shift the emphasis in managing the electricity system from starting up and shutting down power plants to paying business and eventually domestic customers to respond to the system. That means both switching off demand during peak periods and being ready to make use of plentiful cheap power at times when there is a glut.
