UK’s idle gas-fired plants could be sold to Africa

Mothballed UK gas turbines could be exported to Africa, Silvia Stefini, gas product line leader, Europe, for GE’s Power Services business, told New Power.

Exporting second hand engines “gives some value to an asset they no longer use,” said Stefini. Mothballed or shutdown plants that are in good condition can be relocated, she said, and “We are looking at some opportunities from the UK”. However such UK transfers are likely to follow similar exports from Italy and Spain.

Plants have been transferred within companies and within countries in the past, but this type of export is new.
