UKAEA to add rooftop PV and fusion at Culham site

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has awarded a £4.5 million contract for rooftop PV installation to Ameresco.
The three-year contract includes design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of rooftop solar PV units at UKAEA’s Culham Science Centre in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
Culham will this year build a 10,500m2 building to be used by General Fusion to build a 70% scale nuclear fusion power plant. The fusion facility was recently granted planning permission by the South Oxfordshire District Council Planning Committee, and work is expected to start this summer.
When construction of the is complete, General Fusion will lease the building from UKAEA. The company’s fusion machine is expected to be commissioned in 2026 and fully operational by early 2027.
