Lincolnshire energy from waste plant wins development consent

An energy from waste (EFW) plant has been granted development consent. Once in operation the facility will generate 102MW, of which 80MW will be available to the grid, with the rest used on site.
The Boston Alternative Energy Facility will be sited on the banks of The Haven in Boston, Lincolnshire and will process more than a million tonnes of so-called ‘refuse-derived fuel’ (RDF).
The RDF consists of non-recycled household waste which is pre-processed to remove any recyclates. The RDF will arrive baled on ships to the Boston Alternative Energy Facility from UK ports to minimise road traffic movements to and from the site.
The proposed site at the Riverside Industrial Estate in Boston is adjacent to the Haven – and is within an area allocated for industrial development by the local planning authority.
It is expected to create around 80 jobs once operational.
Environmental consultant for the project was Royal HaskoningDHV
Dr Matthew Hunt, Director of Environment at Royal HaskoningDHV, said: “Today’s announcement marks a major milestone in bringing this state-of-the-art facility to fruition, and we look forward to seeing the project move forward”.
