Energy from waste plant wins development consent

The secretary of state has granted development consent for an energy from waste plant in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire,
The Medworth CHP will have an electricity generating capacity of 55MW and provide up to 30MW of usable steam heat to local industrial customers via dedicated pipelines and private wire cables. The development includes a new 132kV underground cable connection into a new Walsoken Substation, connecting the existing substation infrastructure at the Walsoken DNO Substation, providing the electrical connection point to the National Grid and allowing the import and export of electricity to and from the facility.
The project has been developed by MVV UK, of Germany’s MVV Energie AG group, which originated as a municipally owned company until it was part privatised in 1999. It remains 50.1% owned Mannheim City Council. It entered the UK in 2008 and currently has energy from waste plants in operation in Plymouth, Kent and Dundee.
The development consent application was accepted by the Planning Inspectorate for examination on 2 August 2022.
