The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has signed a data-sharing agreement with Xoserve, the gas system’s data services provider,
NESO has responsibility for real-time management of the electricity system but not of gas. It does, however, have responsibility for strategic planning across the whole energy system. With new access to place-based gas usage data, consolidating previously fragmented, regionally sourced datasets, the new agreement will help NESO to deliver its obligations in co-ordinating development of the whole energy system and delivering Regional Energy Strategic Plans (RESPs).
NESO said access to the data will improve its decarbonisation analysis and regional energy planning, “strengthening decisions on heat, network investment and the integration of hydrogen clusters”. By grounding RESPs in real-world gas demand, the Xoserve data will help NESO to develop more accurate, locally tailored energy strategies, ensuring infrastructure investment reflects how energy is used today and how it will evolve.
