Could electric vehicles support the Capacity Market? BEIS asks for evidence on progress

BEIS wants to know whether new generating technologies have emerged in the last year that could participate in future Capacity Market auctions.
In its annual consultation, it asks specifically whether and how electric vehicles connected to the grid could access the Capacity Market, whether that technology has progressed over the past year and grid-connected EVs’ potential to contribute to security of supply.
The department also says that last year stakeholders identified tidal and geothermal as new technologies that may eventually contribute to security of supply and asked for information about its progress.
Among its questions:
• Is there any evidence to show that the technology is commercially viable, for example a proven business model?
• Is the technology able to contribute to security of supply at periods of peak electricity demand e.g. by generating electricity or reducing electricity demand?
• What evidence is there relating to the reliability and availability of this technology at periods of peak electricity demand?
• Is the technology significantly different from existing Capacity Market generating technology classes to warrant its own class?
• What is the technology’s fuel?
• Is the output fully controllable?
Details of the technology and evidence of its contribution to security of supply should be sent to [email protected] by 11pm on 1 November.
The outcome of the review will be published by 1 December.
