The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has published an ‘open call’ for innovators to submit ‘big ideas’ for the future energy system. The open call lasts until 24 December.
It set out some challenges, which include:
• Increasing the visibility in real time of the whole network and ensure the most efficient use of its available capacity.
• Improving situational awareness in the control room, enhancing our visualisation tools and exploring probabilistic decision-making across various time frames and aspects.
• Improve alignment and data sharing across different energy vectors (ie gas, electricity, heat, transport).
However, the system operator did not restrict its ‘open call’ to these issues. It said it wanted to push past the status quo, saying “Whether you’re a new startup, a scaling business, or an imaginative thinker, we want to hear your innovative ideas that push boundaries and reshape the way we think about what’s possible to achieve a secure, affordable and zero carbon future for GB”.
