Enertik, the energy company owned by London’s Enfield Council, has signed a long-term heat supply agreement via district heating with North London Waste Authority (NLWA) and LondonEnergy.

Energetik will capture and use up to 60MW of otherwise untapped heat energy generated at NLWA’s Energy Recovery Facility in Edmonton EcoPark, now under construction. It will meet the heating and hot water needs of more than 10,000 homes and businesses across the Meridian Water development, with the capacity to supply up to 30,000 more homes across the borough and beyond.

LondonEnergy already generates electricity from the waste that cannot be recycled at Edmonton EcoPark. The replacement facility will boost electricity production by 50% as well as providing heat to use locally. Enertik supplies low-carbon heat and hot water to thousands of Enfield residents through community heat networks. Homes connected to the heat network will reduce their consumption of fossil fuel and their carbon emission from heat by up to 92.3%. Enertik also says that with individual gas boilers no longer needed, the emission of excessive nitrogen oxides can be avoided, improving local air quality.

Jayne Clare, Managing Director at Energetik, said:“Finalising this agreement marks a major milestone for Energetik and all our partners. It will allow Energetik to utilise a local, sustainable heat source and supply thousands of homes with low carbon heat and hot water, generating huge carbon savings and contributing towards Enfield’s climate action plan objectives.”

Community Energy England has invited community energy organisations to a meeting with Ofgem, to understand how the reguator operates and let it know about communities’ collective aspirations for their sector.

The meeting on 28 January will have a presentation from Ofgem tailored to community energy interests in the evolving regulatory landscape, followed by open discussion.

The event will focus especially on the Significant Code Review on Access and Targeted Charges which CEE says threatens some members with hugely increased charges to access the grid. Minded to decisions will be published early 2021 but this should still be in time to inform members’ feedback ahead of that.

Port of Tyne has taken a step forward in its plans to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2030 and to electrify the entire port by 2040. Itt has engaged UK Power Networks Services to undertake detailed modelling and analysis of the port’s electricity network.

The analysis will provide Port of Tyne with a detailed understanding of its current and future electricity network as it implements new technologies like electric cranes, electric vehicles and embed sustainable generation such as solar panels on site.

Lee Maxwell, head of client delivery at UK Power Networks Services said: “Our work will provide the port with a detailed understanding of their electricity network. Their demand for electricity will grow as a result of electrifying their cranes, the addition of electric vehicles and the integration of sustainable energy generation. Our analysis will forecast the impact an increased electricity load will have on Port of Tyne and ensure the port’s operations remain resilient.”

Mel Brockhouse, chief operations officer at Port of Tyne, said, “We are about to launch the UK’s only fully electric mobile harbour crane and converting our other legacy diesel-powered assets to electric has already eliminated 700 tonnes of CO2 emissions.”

The project further demonstrates UK Power Networks Services’ commitment to enabling businesses in the north of England work towards their sustainability goals, while supporting growth and investment in the region.

UK Power Networks Services has been delivering critical energy infrastructure solutions for clients for more than 50 years for Network Rail, London Underground and High Speed 1, the UK’s busiest airports, Ministry of Defence, Hinkley Point C, and ports and logistics companies.

Meanwhile in Singapore…

Sustainable energy developer Urban Renewables has offered free electric vehicle charging units for building owners who adopt its solar rooftop or energy efficiency projects. The deal, under the brand Urban Charge, will be available to building owners in the commercial and industrial sector as well as private apartment complexes.

Patricia Eng, Urban Renewables general manager, said,“It is a win-win situation by helping to drive our business partners’ sustainability goals, while supporting the nation’s target to achieve carbon neutrality in the transport sector. The implementation of Urban Charge at zero cost is expected to provide a great boost in confidence and to promote convenient accessibility for building owners and local communities en route to normalizing electric vehicle adoption”.

Edgare Kerkwijk, managing director of the group, which is active across Southeast Asia,, said “There is uncertainty within the private sector at this point of transition, which is exactly why Urban Charge is offered as an incentive with all risks absorbed by us. While the current government efforts are very much focused on public carparks, we see a crucial need to support the installation of EV charging units at corporate and private levels.”
