Energy suppliers offer unlimited use tariff and loyalty scheme to tempt customers

Green Star Energy has launched a new ‘unlimited tariff’, as British Gas announced a new £100m customer reward programme.

The new Green Star Unlimited 12M tariff, available only through comparison site comparethemarket.com until 5 March 2017, gives customers unlimited energy use for a whole year in exchange for a set amount each month. The monthly tariff will be banded based on fuel type and the consumer’s annual consumption during the previous year.

Meanwhile, Centrica announced a new customer reward programme for British Gas customers, including loyalty deals for those who have been British Gas customers the longest. Customers will be able to choose between a selection of personalised offers, ranging from discounted energy and home services to entertainment perks. The supplier said it would also offer a series of bundled tariffs, offering customers British Gas Homecare services, Hive Active Heating or insurance along with their energy.

Mark Hodges, chief executive of Centrica Consumer said: “In the competitive services and energy markets where consumers have many choices, we know we have to work hard to win new business and keep our loyal customers happy. Our customer base is very diverse, and what they want and need from us varies significantly. The rewards programme we’re unveiling today is about offering customers more than just energy.

British Gas and Green Star are not alone in trialling innovative tariffs. In September, Scottish Power announced a pre-pay energy tariff that allows customers to pay for ‘days’ of gas and electricity. Customers can buy up to 180 ‘days’ of gas or electricity, calculated from their previous usage. They can track usage via an app and see how many days they are remaining.
